From spa deals to prix fixe dinners, we hear about a ton of Valentine’s Day date ideas this time of year. And while many of them are perfectly lovely and conventional outings for you and significant other, boo, new fling, “we aren’t putting labels on it,” what have you, here are just a few of the more out-of-the-box date ideas we’ve seen for each stage of your relationship.
First Date: Let Fight or Flight Set In
First dates can be nerve-racking: What should I wear? What if they’re a weirdo? What if they think I’m a weirdo? We wouldn’t blame you if your fight or flight instincts kicked in. In fact, we think you should embrace them and take your potential new partner skydiving. Through February 20, indoor skydiving company iFLY is offering a “Love is in the Air” package, which will “take love to new heights,” per the company’s promotional materials. The $155.99 package (pricing varies on location) includes two videos and four flights in the indoor wind tunnel—temporarily dubbed the “tunnel of love”—for two people. So, blast Tom Petty’s “Free Fallin’” and set your Tinder bio to “who’s ready for an adventure?”
Having the “What Are We” Talk: Show Off Your Intellect at Immersive Frida Kahlo
We know a Frida Kahlo exhibition doesn’t necessarily scream happy, healthy romance—she and her husband, fellow artist Diego Rivera, famously had many affairs throughout their two(!) marriages to each other—but if you loved the Immersive Van Gogh experience last year, you should definitely check out this one. At the Lighthouse Artspace experience, which is open through April 17, stroll through projections of Kahlo’s famous works and self-portraits, like The Two Fridas (1939) and Diego and I (1946), plus photos and other imagery exploring the famous Mexican artist’s inner thoughts and artistic traditions. Just read Kahlo’s Wiki page ahead of time or recall that one college art history class you took, and you’ll impress your new partner into committing to monogamy with your urbane understanding of culture.
Taking the Next Step: Pretend Your Life’s a Rom-Com and Propose at Reunion Tower
Sadly, Dallas is no New York City—we have no Empire State Buildings to meet paramours at midnight—but we do have Reunion Tower, where more than 700 couples apparently get engaged every year. Fully on board with this trend, Reunion Tower is offering special packages, also called “Love is in the Air”, February 11–14. Book your tickets and take the “Fast Pass to Love” elevator up to the Geo-Deck for the swoon-worthy views of Dallas that Big Rom Com just doesn’t seem to appreciate. There’ll be plenty of photo opportunities—special prints and digital images are included in the package—as well as sparkling wine. Saxophonist Alex Styers will be on site playing the most quintessentially romantic instrument, and magician Grant Price will also be there 6–9 p.m. on Valentine’s Day. Great views, wine, a saxophone, and magic? Someone call Tom Hanks.
Put a Ring on It: Get Married in … Flower Mound?
Why spend months, maybe even years, and thousands of dollars planning a wedding when you can elope in Flower Mound for just $65? To celebrate Valentine’s Day, new wedding venue River Walk Chapel and Hall is throwing a huge “Love on the Rocks” party Saturday, February 12. From 7 p.m. to midnight, you can enjoy sweet treats, a photobooth, a cash bar, and music from rockabilly cover band Penny and the Flamethrowers—fronted by pin-up model Penny Ruffle. And, if all that’s on your dream wedding Pinterest board, then walk up to the on-site officiant from 7–9 p.m. and get married (just remember to bring your marriage license).
